Gluten-Free Dining in Venice

View the menu

Finding a truly gluten-free restaurant in Venice is not always easy. At Terrazza Sommariva, on the Grand Canal a two-minute walk from the Rialto Bridge, we have been preparing gluten-free dishes for years: certified GF pasta cooked in dedicated water, gluten-free bread, house-made desserts and a full seafood menu that can be adapted for coeliac and gluten-sensitive guests.

How we handle cross-contamination

The kitchen works with wheat pasta and bread every day, but for gluten-free dishes we use dedicated pots, chopping boards, utensils and plating area. Staff are trained on AIC (Italian Coeliac Association) protocols. Please tell us at booking so the brigade is organised from the start of service.

Venetian classics that are naturally gluten-free

Many staples of Venetian cuisine contain no gluten: sarde in saor (without the bread on the side), baccalà mantecato with white polenta, soft-shell crabs fried in rice flour, seafood risotto, granseola alla veneziana, mixed fried seafood prepared with rice and corn flour on request. Every adaptable dish is flagged on the menu.

Gluten-free Cacio e Pepe and pasta

Our famous Cacio e Pepe is prepared with certified gluten-free durum-wheat spaghetti, cooked in a dedicated pot. Also available: gluten-free potato gnocchi, rice tagliatelle with sea-bass ragù, and risotti (Carnaroli, naturally GF) with cuttlefish, seafood or Champagne.

Dedicated bread, breadsticks and desserts

Packaged gluten-free bread and breadsticks arrive at the table stored separately. Our pastry chef prepares tiramisù, panna cotta with red-fruit coulis and flourless chocolate caprese cake every day — all naturally gluten-free. On 24-hour notice we can prepare a birthday cake or bespoke dessert.

Wines, Spritz and safe cocktails

Every wine on our list is naturally gluten-free. The Venetian Spritz (Aperol or Select with Prosecco DOC) and classic cocktails are safe. Our floor staff know which beers and spirits to avoid and will guide your choice.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to tell you in advance if I'm coeliac?
Yes — please flag it in the booking form or by WhatsApp. That lets us set up dedicated pots, boards and a trained station from the very start of service, with no waiting at the table.
Do you have the AIC (Italian Coeliac Association) certification?
We are not an AIC-certified venue, but we follow the AIC protocol for cross-contamination: dedicated station, utensils and cookware, trained staff.
Is the gluten-free pasta the same famous Cacio e Pepe?
Yes. We prepare Cacio e Pepe with certified gluten-free durum-wheat spaghetti, mantecato with Pecorino Romano DOP and Sarawak pepper. The recipe and the mantecatura gesture are exactly the same.
Is the mixed fried seafood safe for coeliacs?
On request, yes: we fry it in dedicated oil, with rice and corn flour instead of 00 wheat flour. Please request it at booking, since it needs clean oil and a separate fryer.
Do you have options for coeliac children?
Yes — gluten-free pasta with tomato or fish ragù, grilled chicken with vegetables, individually packaged artisan ice cream. Children's menu €18.
