The perfect sunset on the terrace

Sunset on the Grand Canal is never the same two nights in a row. It shifts with the tide, with the scirocco wind, with the wake of the vaporetti in front of the Riva del Vin. From June to August the sun drops behind the Rialto Bridge between 8:45 and 9:15 PM: that is our best hour, when the Istrian stone of the bridge glows pink and the facades on the opposite bank turn warm gold.

To really live this moment we suggest booking a front-row table at least an hour and a half before sunset. Arriving early has a practical reason: the light just before sundown — Venice's golden hour — is arguably more beautiful than the sunset itself, and it deserves an ombra of chilled white while the dining room slowly wakes up.

Our favourite tables are the three closest to the railing, on the side facing the Rialto Bridge. If you are travelling as a couple, ask for the corner one: it is the most private, sheltered from the service path yet with the same full view. For families or groups of four we suggest the central row, which has more room and lets everyone turn toward the canal without moving chairs.

One last tip: bring a light jacket, even in July. Once the sun disappears behind Rialto, a fresh damp breeze rises from the Grand Canal — welcome after a hot day, but a surprise if you are not expecting it. And stay: the most beautiful Venice comes half an hour after sunset, when the terrace lanterns switch on and the palazzi mirror themselves in the still water. That is usually when the first dessert of the evening leaves the kitchen.
